How long will this gaming rig last me?
I'm about to build this in the next few months:
EVGA 750i FTW motherboard
Q9450 ''Yorkfield'' processor
2 8800gt's in SLI (Already have one, so decided to buy another)
750W PSU w/ 45 amps on the 12V rail
3 GB 667 DDR2 memory
Apevia Black X-Cruiser Case w/ 4 fans
Copper CPU heatsink/fan
And how well do you think it would overclock?
Its actually 2 gigs of 800mhz memory, and 1 gig of 667, 4 sticks all together, 2 1 Gb sticks, and 2 512 sticks, the 1 GB sticks are 800, the 512 are 667, so it'd downclock.
Well, putting aside the question of whether you'd want to maximize the lifespan of components by not overclocking...
To OC, you'd need 800Mhz DDR2 RAM. The 667Mhz is matched perfectly for the Q9450 at stock speed (1333 FSB)
Twin 8800GTs for SLI is great, and the recently lowered 8800GT prices make that an attractive buy. The rig is good for a few years, the processor will certainly hold its own. The rapidly mutating video card realm simply is what it is- you can't really future proof (even spending a fortune) because the situation changes every 4-6 months. Right now you could buy the king-of-cards GeForce 280 for $600 but it just edges the $300 Radeon 4870.
Still, I have to think your SLI combo will remain upper echelon for at least a year....
